Revalidation – Doctors, Nurses & Midwives

Revalidation for Doctors was introduced at the end of 2012.

What is Revalidation?

Revalidation is the process by which doctors have to demonstrate to the GMC that they are up to date and compliant with the relevant professional standards. Revalidation will be based on a local evaluation of doctors’ performance through annual appraisal. The information from the appraisal will be given to a Responsible Officer who will make a recommendation to the GMC, normally every five years on whether to revalidate a doctor.

What is the purpose of Revalidation?

The purpose of revalidation is to assure patients, the public and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are up to date and are practising to the appropriate professional standards.

Who does it apply to?

All doctors who hold a Licence to Practise  in the UK, are required to have annual appraisals.

Requirements for domestic and overseas candidates who wish to work in the UK will be depend on a standard medical assessment. Criteria will vary depending on institution but may include:

• References
• Right to work in UK
• IELTS (non-EU only)
• PLAB (non-EU only)
